Workshop Description:
Women’s reproductive grief and trauma are often invisible to others, yet when untreated can have insidious effects on their sense of self and intimacy with others. Providers are uniquely positioned to help decrease psychological distress, foster effective coping, engender empowerment within their clients, and help clients feel empowered in treatment with medical providers. The purpose of this workshop is to support providers in effectively addressing reproductive mental health issues with their clients. Providers will be able to explain the mental health effects of infertility, pregnancy loss, reproductive trauma, and perimenopause. Providers will learn clinical strategies and resources to help decrease distress in treatment with women. The workshop will also review clinical documentation approaches to the controversial aspects of this topic. Particular attention will be given to systemic-, cultural-, and individual-level factors in reproductive mental health care, including a focus on implicit bias in clinical intervention and documentation.
