- Compare radical openness to overcontrol: Explore how radical openness contrasts with overcontrol and learn effective strategies to help clients embrace vulnerability and flexibility to create “a life worth sharing.”
- Utilize self-inquiry for growth: Understand the concept of self-inquiry and how to guide clients in identifying their "edge" (or personal unknown) to foster continuous growth and development.
- Explain and use the RO DBT Diary Card with clients as a tool for tracking emotional patterns and progress in therapy.
- Apply RO DBT skills in treatment: Identify key RO DBT skills and techniques to support clients in recovering from conditions such as anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, OCD, anorexia, and more.
Workshop Description:
Over-control is one of the most challenging dynamics to address in mental health recovery. The rigidity, perfectionism, and extreme anxiety that often accompany overcontrol can prevent individuals from making meaningful progress in their healing journey. In the complex world of intimacy and relationships, clients must learn to embrace flexibility and tolerate vulnerability to create “a life worth sharing.” This workshop will explore how Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) can help decrease the burden of control that blocks true emotional connection and personal growth.
Many individuals struggle with deep feelings of loneliness and emotional suffering despite their efforts to maintain control. RO DBT provides a compassionate, evidence-based framework that illuminates the pain caused by overcontrol and its impact on relationships. In recent years, especially during and after the pandemic, many have turned to behaviors like food, alcohol, and avoidance as coping mechanisms, leading to further isolation. For these individuals, the need for connection and nurturing is critical but often overshadowed by the weight of perfectionism and emotional control.
This workshop will focus on how RO DBT can help decrease the self-judgment, rigidity, and perfectionism that keep clients isolated from their most intimate connections. Through RO DBT, we will explore powerful strategies to reduce self-criticism, perfectionism, depression, anxiety, and obsessions—enabling participants to reconnect with others and experience greater emotional freedom.
More About What You Will Learn:
- How beneficial RO DBT is to working with treatment-resistant anxiety, depression, ASD, and anorexia
- The Power of Vulnerability/Outing Ourselves: Explore how flexibility and openness are key to building authentic, intimate relationships.
- RO DBT Techniques: Learn specific strategies to reduce overcontrol, perfectionism, and emotional isolation.
- Healing Emotional Loneliness: Discover how to help clients break free from isolation and reconnect with their community and support systems.
- Evidence-Based Practice: Gain insights into the latest research and clinical techniques to apply RO DBT effectively with clients.
Who Should Attend: This workshop is ideal for clinicians working with people who use overcontrol as a coping mechanism for emotional distress. If you are looking for a state-of-the-art, evidence-based approach to help your clients heal and create meaningful connections, this workshop is for you.
Join us for a workshop that empowers you to help your clients break free from the limitations of over-control and unlock a life filled with greater connection, authenticity, and emotional healing.
