In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Review possible “combination treatment” approaches that include neurotherapeutic interventions (psychiatric medications, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and therapeutic psychedelic prescribing) along with psychotherapy.
  • Discuss clients who would benefit from the initiation (or adjustment) of psychiatric medications or might need an evaluation for a physical medical illness.
  • Demonstrate how to effectively incorporate the review of a client’s biological/neurotherapeutic treatment into ongoing psychotherapeutic work.
  • Analyze the role of psychotherapeutic formulation in enhancing the effectiveness of combination treatment and improving treatment outcomes.
  • Discuss the use of interdisciplinary collaboration to improve outcomes for clients with complex and treatment-resistant presentations while enhancing the client and practitioner experience.

Workshop Description:

This amazing psychiatry duo has taught other workshops for The Knowledge Tree with outstanding reviews!! Please join us for another intriguing workshop on interdisciplinary treatment from the perspective of two holistic psychiatrists!!

As a result of the trend for mental health awareness, advocacy, and acceptance, it appears more clients are arriving for psychotherapy already taking or wanting to take psychiatric medications or try something different in addition to psychotherapy. The utilization of concurrent psychotherapy and medication management is often referred to as “combination treatment.” Combination treatment can be useful and effective for many clients. Yet, as the number of psychotherapeutic, biological/neurotherapeutic (e.g., psychiatric medications, transcranial magnetic stimulation, therapeutic psychedelic prescribing), and integrative options continue to expand, it can be difficult to know how to best guide our clients in choosing the next step in care.

This workshop will address practical questions, such as:

  • Who are my psychotherapy clients that would benefit from medication management?
  • What types of treatments are my clients receiving or willing to receive?
  • Where (and to whom) should I send my clients for medication management?
  • Why is combination or integrative treatment recommended at this time?
  • When is the addition of biological or integrative treatment interventions most effective?

We will together explore these questions and the psychodynamic impacts of biological treatments, especially for clients with severe, complicated, and/or treatment-resistant presentations, including those with medical comorbidities. The goal of this workshop is to arm clinicians with concepts and methods for helping clients extract the greatest benefit from both combination and integrative treatments.
