Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Identify key differences and overlaps between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.
  • Assess how special interests, routines, and rigidity in autism interact with OCD symptoms and integrate them into ERP and ACT-based interventions to enhance engagement and effectiveness.
  • Discuss potential modifications for exposure and response prevention (ERP) interventions to accommodate sensory sensitivities, cognitive rigidity, and communication styles common in autistic individuals with OCD.
  • Develop strategies to help autistic clients with OCD build cognitive flexibility, tolerate uncertainty, and improve emotional regulation skills through structured and concrete interventions.
  • Discuss the importance of a neurodiversity-affirming approach, integrating client strengths, special interests, and individualized communication styles to foster engagement and treatment adherence.

Workshop Description:

The rigidity and inflexibility found in OCD can look a lot like autism and vice versa. OCD and autism can coexist, creating unique challenges in assessment and treatment. Traditional approaches to OCD treatment—especially Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—can be difficult for autistic clients due to sensory sensitivities, cognitive rigidity, and communication differences. Without proper modifications, treatment may feel inaccessible or even counterproductive.

This workshop is designed for those seeking to refine their approach to treating co-occurring OCD and autism. Through practical strategies, case examples, and the delivery of tangible skills, this workshop will equip you to advance the techniques used to work with neurodivergent populations and refine your effectiveness when working with this population.
