Workshop Description:

Have you worked with people or know people who have Hoarding Disorder or a propensity in that direction and didn’t know what to do or just wanted to learn more? This is a multi-faceted diagnosis that requires a lot of skill to treat, so we hope you will join us.

We will provide an in-depth exploration of Hoarding Disorder, covering the latest research and treatment methods, including an innovative virtual reality approach. Participants will start by exploring their own views about possessions and attachment via a brief questionnaire. Next, we’ll delve into the history of hoarding and significant historical events such as wars, the Great Depression, and natural disasters, which have led to multi-generational trauma, loss, and 'what-if' thinking that contribute to hoarding behaviors and the disorder's progression, especially in later life. The course will review information processing issues and the unique underlying beliefs of individuals who hoard, alongside an examination of common comorbidities and the prioritization of their treatment. Patterns of avoidance, acquisition, and attachment will be described, and strategies for appropriately engaging family and friends to enhance positive outcomes and prevent catastrophic negative results will be identified. Participants will learn to apply motivation, leveraging techniques, and specific communication strategies to effect positive change. The training will include the application of CBT, DBT, and Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) in treating hoarding disorder, with video demonstrations of Dr. Becky working with clients on the television show "Hoarding: Buried Alive." Additionally, the course will review the skills used by professional organizers with people who hoard and ERP strategies for non-acquisition tactics. Guidelines for conducting home visits, safety inspections, and ensuring personal safety in dangerous environments will be provided. Finally, the harm reduction approach to treating Hoarding Disorder will also be discussed and illustrated through video clips.
