Educational Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Differentiate the presenting disorders associated with health anxiety, including Illness Anxiety Disorder, Somatic Symptom Disorder, and OCD with related health themes.
  • Assess the common symptoms associated with these psychiatric conditions, including common triggers, obsessions, and compulsions.
  • Identify the common rituals/safety behaviors that occur in health anxiety that reinforce the cycle of anxiety.
  • Apply evidenced-based interventions used to eliminate rituals, embrace anxiety, and prioritize values-based life activities.

Workshop Description:

Health anxiety, driven by excessive worry about illness or bodily sensations, can significantly impair daily functioning and lead to increased healthcare utilization. This training will explore the underlying causes (etiology) of health anxiety, including maladaptive health beliefs and compulsive behaviors that reinforce the cycle of anxiety. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the psychological and behavioral mechanisms that maintain health-related worries and reinforce cycles of anxiety.

The presentation will also focus on evidence-based treatment strategies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention techniques (ERP), and mindfulness-based interventions. Special attention will be given to addressing reassurance-seeking behaviors, avoidance, and rumination while providing tools to help patients disengage from mental and behavioral rituals. This training will equip participants with practical skills to help individuals manage health anxiety and increase their competency to address the intricacies that are associated with Health Anxiety.
