Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

• Discuss the importance of integrating current cultural competence in therapy work.
• Identify the social origin of one’s identity.
• Assess how media and culture reflect collective norms and inform an individual’s experience of self.
• Analyze how the themes in the Barbie movie may affect both your own life and the lives of others.
• Discuss how to help empower and liberate clients from oppressive systemic pressures and inequities from a culturally-informed perspective.

Workshop Description:

Movies and media, in general, are important agents of socialization and reflect the social, political, and cultural values of a particular time period. "Barbie" earned more than $1.45 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film ever from a female filmmaker at the domestic box office and is the largest worldwide film release of 2023. Given its incredible success and its obvious exploration of gender dynamics and patriarchy, it seems pertinent for clinicians to explore the psychological underpinnings of the film, uncover how the themes about gender, power, and systemic injustice relate to personal identity, as well as consider its relevance for psychotherapeutic work. In this workshop, we will explore particular moments in the film that highlight social and gendered issues to understand how we can have these culturally informed discussions to help empower and liberate clients from oppressive systemic pressures and inequities.

Meghan Klein Toups, Ph.D., LPC, CHHC

Meghan Klein Toups, Ph.D., LPC, has worked in the field as a Licensed Professional Counselor for the past 17 years and specializes in the holistic treatment of anxiety disorders in empathic women. Meghan earned a B.A. in Psychology from Loyola University, a M.S. in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from The University of West Georgia. She owns a private practice called Merge Wellness located in Marietta, Georgia. Her research focuses on how sociocultural ideologies are interiorized and manifest as anxiety in women, drawing from psychodynamic, humanistic, and feminist theories. Additionally, she has a special interest in exploring the social and individual impacts of gendered diagnoses on mental health. As a part-time professor at Kennesaw State University, she teaches Psychopathology and Psychology of Sex and Gender and mentors students entering the field. Meghan has presented her work in numerous conferences and workshops and enjoys connecting and collaborating with colleagues.

Amy Howard, LMFT

Amy Howard is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. She is also certified as a Sex Therapist by the American American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). Amy completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia majoring in Child and Family Development. She earned her Masters of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Auburn University. Amy completed a masters thesis on the topic of married women’s sexual satisfaction.

Amy is the owner and founder of Atlanta Couples and Sex Therapy and specializes in helping people with relationship and sexual problems. These problems may include sexual interest and desire issues, sexual functioning concerns such as difficulty with orgasm, painful intercourse, early or delayed ejaculation, erectile issues, and out of control sexual behaviors such as concerns around one’s masturbation practices and online sexual imagery consumption. Amy helps couples heal from affairs and breaches of trust in their partnerships. She also helps people navigate a variety of other issues that impact relationships including: anxiety, depression, unemployment, financial stress, parenting concerns, illness, and past trauma. Amy is a kink-aware professional.

Amy is in the process of becoming an AAMFT approved supervisor under the direction of Michael Chafin, LMFT (licensed in GA). She is also pursuing her Sex Therapy Supervisor credential under the direction of psychologist, sex therapist, and certified sex therapy supervisor Dr Mesha Ellis.

In addition to seeing clients in her private practice, Amy speaks on a variety of topics and has presented to multiple parent groups about how to talk to their children about sex and sexuality in age-appropriate ways.
