- Presented by: Alexia Rothman, Ph.D. (see bio below)
- Target Audience: Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, Psychotherapists, Other Mental Health Professionals
- Instruction Level: Advanced
Learning Objectives:
In this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Describe the use of pure IFS techniques to befriend and help parts that experience and strategically utilize sympathetic and dorsal survival states in the nervous system (Dr. Rothman will provide case videos for illustration).
- Demonstrate how IFS techniques can facilitate clients’ ability to regulate their emotional and physiological states in and between sessions through the process of “Internal Co-Regulation.”
- Explain the IFS position on traditional grounding, emotion-regulation, and body-regulating techniques and the importance of compassionate messaging to parts when using such techniques.
- Analyze the phenomenon of resistance in psychotherapy through a Polyvagal-informed IFS lens, including how to use IFS techniques to work with resistance.
- Compare empathy and compassion from an IFS lens and their relevance to the integration of IFS and PVT.
- Identify client-level and therapist-level considerations for adjusting the empathy-to-compassion ratio in commonly encountered therapeutic situations.
Workshop Description:
Based on popular demand, Dr. Rothman is excited to provide a continued exploration of the integration of Dr. Richard Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy and Dr. Stephen Porges’s Polyvagal Theory (PVT). This advanced workshop is designed as a follow-up to Dr. Rothman’s IFS and PVT integration course: https://www.theknowledgetree.org/p/ifs-and-polyvagal-online/. Concepts to be explored include the “Therapeutic Dose of Empathy” in IFS sessions. The power of “Internal Co-Regulation” will be discussed for both in-the-moment regulation and the long-term retuning of the autonomic nervous system, highlighting the significance of co-regulation in achieving effective therapy outcomes. Additionally, the importance of communicating compassionately with parts when using emotion regulation and body-regulating techniques will be addressed. Finally, we will explore therapeutic resistance through a Polyvagal-informed IFS lens and its relevance to the integration of IFS and PVT.
Presented by: Alexia Rothman, Ph.D.
