Learning Objectives:
In this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Describe features of perfectionism from an ACT lens.
- Identify six core processes and their corresponding core yearnings for an ACT-consistent conceptualization of perfectionism.
- Prepare a functional analysis using interactive tools designed to target experiential avoidance effectively.
- Create a treatment approach that emphasizes function over form and reflects the client’s values.
- Apply tailored interventions to strengthen psychological flexibility and self-compassion.
Workshop Description:
Do you have perfectionistic clients that need your help? If you want to deepen your understanding of perfectionism through an ACT lens, enhance your case conceptualization skills, and learn actionable tools to increase psychological flexibility, this workshop is for you! This advanced, interactive workshop is the perfect follow-up to the foundation laid in our previous session, ACT for Perfectionism, which you may still take on-demand here.
In this workshop, we’ll dive deep into the complex nature of perfectionism, offering a comprehensive ACT framework for treating it effectively. You’ll leave with practical skills to use in your clinical work, whether you’re dealing with clients who are struggling with rigid standards, conditional self-worth, or an inability to tolerate any perceived failures.
You will understand how perfectionism presents itself in a multitude of ways across different individuals and contexts. We will review how perfectionistic mindsets and behaviors are shaped over time. Additionally, we will provide an overview of ACT’s six core processes and the deeper, underlying yearnings of each. These insights will allow you to tailor interventions to your client’s unique experiences, rather than just focusing on surface-level symptoms.
Through observing role plays, you will identify how to spot perfectionistic behaviors that function as experiential avoidance and develop strategies to intervene in a way that makes sense for the individual. The emphasis will be on addressing the function of perfectionistic behaviors, not just their form or appearance. We’ll move beyond "cookie-cutter" interventions and demonstrate a more flexible treatment approach that aligns with your clients’ values.
Lastly, we will explore specific interventions that help clients increase their psychological flexibility while cultivating self-compassion. You’ll leave with actionable tools to support clients in breaking free from the cycle of perfectionism and embracing a more flexible, value-driven life.
Who Should Attend:
This is an advanced workshop designed for therapists and clinicians already familiar with ACT basics. If you joined us for ACT for Perfectionism last spring, this workshop will serve as an excellent follow-up. If you have experience with ACT and want to build on your knowledge to treat perfectionism, you’ll benefit from the deeper dive into case conceptualization and intervention strategies. We’re excited to have you back (or meet you for the first time) and help you sharpen your skills in working with perfectionism through an ACT lens!
Note: Some prior knowledge of ACT is highly recommended. If you’re new to ACT or didn’t attend the first part of this series, we recommend reviewing some basic ACT principles or taking the original ACT for Perfectionism workshop before jumping in. We look forward to seeing you there!
